Bed bug control in London

Bed bugs are found, not spotted. They sit in seams, screw holes and frame joints within a few feet of the bed, and the inspection is what makes the treatment work.

The problem

What you are dealing with

Bed bugs feed on blood at night and spend the rest of the time hidden in tight, dark crevices close to where someone sleeps. That is usually the mattress seam and label, the slats and joints of the bed frame, the headboard fixings and the wall behind it — and then, as a population grows, the bedside table, the skirting, the curtain hem and the edge of the carpet.

They are flat enough to sit in a gap you would not think twice about, which is why they are so often missed. They also travel on luggage, second-hand furniture and bags rather than walking in from outside, so a bed bug problem has almost always been carried into a property rather than caused by it. Nothing about it reflects on how clean a home is.

Bites are the usual first sign, but bites alone are not a diagnosis — people react very differently and some do not react at all. Physical evidence is what confirms it.

Signs to look for

Signs of bed bugs in a property

What actually confirms bed bugs, rather than suggests them:

  • Small dark spots on the mattress seam, bed base or wall behind the headboard — digested blood, which smears if wiped with a damp cloth
  • Rusty or pale brown blood spotting on sheets, usually near where you lie
  • Shed skins, which are translucent and empty, in seams and joints
  • Live insects: flat, oval, reddish-brown, roughly apple-pip sized when adult, with much smaller pale nymphs
  • Bites in a line or small cluster on skin exposed at night — indicative, but never enough on its own
  • A sweet, slightly musty smell in a heavily affected room

Why it needs doing properly

Why professional treatment may be needed

Bed bugs hide across a whole room, not in one item, and they tolerate a lot. Throwing out the mattress is a common first reaction and rarely solves anything — the remaining population simply stays in the frame, the skirting and the furniture, and the new mattress is reached within days.

Eggs are also glued into crevices and are not reached by most surface products, so a treatment that ignores the hatch cycle gives you a few quiet weeks and then a return.

The other risk is spread. Moving an affected mattress through a flat, or sleeping in a different room to escape the bites, usually moves the problem rather than escaping it. We will tell you where to sleep and what not to move before treatment begins.

What the inspection involves

  • We start at the bed and work outwards: mattress seams and label, the base, every slat and joint of the frame, headboard fixings and the wall behind it.
  • We then check within a few metres — bedside furniture, drawer runners, the underside of upholstered seating, skirting joints, carpet edges, curtain hems and loose wallpaper or trim.
  • We look for the full picture: live insects, shed skins, spotting and eggs, since each tells us something different about how long this has been going on.
  • We check adjoining rooms where activity suggests the population has already moved beyond the bedroom.

How the treatment works

  • Treatment covers the whole affected room rather than the bed alone, because the insects will already be spread across the harbourage points found during the inspection.
  • The programme is planned around the hatch cycle, so a follow-up visit is normal rather than a sign something went wrong. We will tell you the intended schedule before we start.
  • We give you clear, specific preparation instructions — what to launder and at what temperature, what to bag, what to leave completely alone, and where to sleep in the meantime.
  • After treatment we tell you what is normal to see and at what point you should call us rather than wait.

Preventing it happening again

Treatment deals with what is there now. These are the things that reduce the chance of it coming back.

  • Check the mattress seams and headboard whenever you move into a new place or return from a stay away.
  • Keep luggage off the bed and off the floor when travelling, and unpack directly into a hot wash where you can.
  • Inspect second-hand beds, mattresses, sofas and upholstered chairs carefully before bringing them in.
  • Encase the mattress and base if you have had bed bugs before — it removes a large part of the available harbourage and makes future checks much easier.
  • Reduce clutter beside and under the bed, which is where a spreading population goes next.

Bed bugs in London properties

Bed bugs are a well-known issue in London simply because of how much movement there is — house shares, short lets, hotels, second-hand furniture and daily commuting all give them routes between properties. In converted flats and HMOs they can also move between units along shared voids and pipework, so if the inspection suggests the problem is not confined to one room or one flat, we will say so.

EVO Pest Control works across London and nearby areas, in homes and in commercial premises, from 1 Fulham Palace Rd, London W6 8AB.
