Carpet beetle treatment in London

The adult beetles on the windowsill are not what is eating the carpet. The larvae are, and they are somewhere darker and more sheltered.

The problem

What you are dealing with

Carpet beetle damage is caused entirely by the larvae, which are small, bristly and often described as looking like tiny hairy caterpillars — hence the old name, woolly bears. They feed on keratin: wool carpet, wool and cashmere clothing, silk, felt, feather filling, animal hide, and the natural fibres in rugs and upholstery. The adult beetles do none of this. They feed on pollen outdoors and are mainly a sign that a breeding population is established somewhere inside.

That gap between what you see and what is causing the damage is the whole difficulty with carpet beetles. People notice small mottled beetles on a windowsill in spring, brush them away, and only discover the damage months later when a rug is moved or a wardrobe is emptied. By then the larvae have been feeding in the dark for a season.

The other thing that matters is where they came from. Carpet beetles frequently breed in bird nests in roof voids, soffits and disused chimneys, where there is a steady supply of feathers and organic debris. When the nest is abandoned, the larvae migrate down into the building and find the carpets. Treating the rooms and leaving the nest in place gives you the same problem again the following year.

Signs to look for

Signs of carpet beetles in a property

Carpet beetles are usually found by the damage rather than by the insect. These are the things people describe when they call:

  • Irregular holes or worn bare patches in wool carpet, concentrated along edges, under furniture and in rooms that are rarely disturbed
  • Damage to wool or cashmere clothing in a wardrobe or drawer, often on items that have been stored for a season
  • Shed larval skins — dry, pale, bristly casings — in carpet pile, in drawers or along skirting
  • Small hairy larvae, a few millimetres long, in carpet edges or under a rug
  • Small mottled beetles, brown, cream and black, on windowsills or at windows in spring and early summer
  • A history of birds nesting in the roof, soffits or a chimney above the affected rooms

Why it needs doing properly

Why professional treatment may be needed

A shop-bought spray applied to the open floor misses the point. Larvae feed in the sheltered places — under furniture that is never moved, along the gripper rod at the carpet edge, beneath a wardrobe, in the fold of a stored rug. Those are the areas that need treating, and they are the areas most people never get to.

Identification also changes the answer. Carpet beetle damage is frequently mistaken for clothes moth damage, and while both feed on keratin, the inspection and the treatment are not the same. Getting that wrong wastes a visit.

And if the source is a bird nest in a roof void, treating the bedroom is treating the symptom. The nest is the reservoir, and it needs to be dealt with properly — bearing in mind that wild birds and active nests are legally protected, so timing matters.

What the inspection involves

  • We confirm the species first, because carpet beetle and clothes moth damage look similar and need different treatments.
  • We look where the larvae actually feed: carpet edges and gripper rods, under and behind furniture, beneath rugs, inside wardrobes and drawers, and in stored textiles.
  • We check for shed skins as well as live larvae, since the skins persist and show how long and how widely the population has been active.
  • We look upwards for the source — roof voids, soffits, eaves and chimney openings — and for any current or past bird nesting above the affected rooms.

How the treatment works

  • Treatment is directed at the harbourage rather than sprayed across open floor: carpet edges, beneath furniture, the perimeter of rooms, and the interiors of wardrobes and storage where damage has been found.
  • We ask you to empty and vacuum affected wardrobes and drawers before we treat, and to have furniture movable where it needs lifting. Access to the edges is most of the job.
  • Heavily infested stored textiles may need laundering at a high temperature or freezing, and we will tell you which items are worth treating and which are not.
  • Where a bird nest is the source, the recommendation covers removal and proofing as well as the rooms, including where that work needs to wait for the end of the nesting season.

Preventing it happening again

Treatment deals with what is there now. These are the things that reduce the chance of it coming back.

  • Vacuum carpet edges, under furniture and inside wardrobes, not just the open floor — that is where the larvae are.
  • Move heavy furniture periodically so the carpet underneath is disturbed and can be checked.
  • Store wool, cashmere and silk clean and sealed, rather than putting worn items away for a season.
  • Proof soffits, eaves and chimney openings against bird nesting, outside the nesting season.
  • Clear old nests and accumulated debris from roof voids once it is legal and safe to do so.

Carpet beetles in London properties

A lot of London housing gives carpet beetles exactly what they need: open or capped-but-unlined chimneys, worn soffits, accessible roof voids above converted flats, and wool carpet in rooms that see very little traffic. Top-floor flats in period conversions are the classic case, with a nest in the void above and damage appearing in the bedroom carpet below. Long-standing offices with wool carpet tiles and furniture that never moves see the same pattern for the same reason.

  • Look at what you are finding. Carpet beetle larvae are bristly and leave dry shed skins behind; clothes moth larvae are smooth and leave silk webbing and gritty frass. Adult carpet beetles are small rounded mottled beetles, often at windows. If you are not sure, keep what you found and show us — it changes the treatment.
